Glam Lamb
Farmers markets are something of day out to many, and to some a way of life, the later being very much that for John and Fiona of ‘Glam Lamb’. John joined his father farming, after Agriculture College in the eighties, running what was essentially a livestock farm.
His love for his farm, livestock and loyal four legged friends (Song, Blue & Beauty) was matched by his true love Fiona (opera singer). The fortunes of Glam Lamb have not always been so romantic. Just as the current day where everyone’s purse strings are tightening, it was the same for John & Fiona in the early nineties. Week after week market price for the lambs dropped to a rock bottom price of just £11 each, it was costing him over double this to rear them.
At this point John put on his ‘Golden Boots’ and decided to sell direct to the customer, by passing the super markets and trading at local and further a field markets across the bridge, and didn’t he make the right decision. ‘Glam Lamb’ was born!
The markets were the saving grace of Wern Fawr Farm and from there on they have grown from strength to strength. Glam lamb certainly do have a loyal following and John told me how the customers love their lamb and look forward to the seeing them. John & Fiona are only to pleased to talk about the farm and flock. They can advise their customers on what cut to buy and how to cook it so you can get the best from what ever you choose.
They breed Glamorgan Welsh Ewes with Charollais Rams, each lamb has their attention to ensure they have a healthy and happy rearing, until the time comes for them to go to market.
Each lamb spends up to 1 week in the lambing shed, after which they are free to spring into action in the field. The Flock has a naturally strong immunity to disease and therefore there’s no need for any injections or supplements. This has to be one of the most natural products you will come across.
From their modest red and white striped market stall It seems Johns got all angles covered. You can buy anything from beautifully dainty lamb chops, homemade lamb burgers and sausages, to legs, shoulders or even the traditional deal of half a lamb.
Also available are hot lamb burgers, a soft floury bap filled with a giant juicy mushroom, lamb burger, blue cheese and their very own minted mayo (you can even buy this in a jar!).
There’s no denying market trading is hard work, but John and Fiona really do put their heart, soul & life into it. John puts success down to superb animal husbandry, and Fiona. He honestly doesn’t know another women who can lamb and sing a Russian opera simultaneously! If you visit the market look out for the tell tell sign of ‘golden boots’, and if it’s the festive season you may even be in for a complimentary operatic chorus.
