A review of Wells Market by Lucy Morgan
Historic Wells
Wells is an historic town, which has had a market for centuries, and today is no exception! Every Saturday market traders appear very early in the morning often as the sun is rising, to set up stalls which appeal to everyone who is attracted to the market place.
You’ll find an array of culinary delights from spices, olives, to fresh meat, cheese & bread.
30 Varieties of Bread Plus Cakes and Savouries
If your lucky enough to get to the market early you can peruse over the variety of bread on offer from the Butternut Deli. There are over 30 varieties, and that’s not including the freshly baked, hand made croissants & pastries.
Butternut Deli offer 3 varieties of wheat free breads and Spelt too!
Butternut Deli also offer many varieties of home baked cakes and savouries. Gluten free sweet and savouries are a real hit with the locals and visitors. They are great in taste and texture suiting everyone and they particularly bring a smile to those with dietary requirements.
Olive, Cheese and Vegetable Stalls
The table next to Butternut Deli, is under the weight of millions of olives from Viva Oliva. The selection is overwhelming and smells great! There is also a great choice of antipasti, bread, oils & vinegars.
Cheese is also in abundance at the market, you have a choice of shopping at the Lancashire cheese company, or from Bruno ‘The French Guy’. Both offer some great cheeses which would compliment any cheese board.
Bruno has some superb French cheeses from small producers to some more well known ones. You can also source French made pates, dried fruits, olives, pastries and cold meats.
Veggies and fruit are always available. From the local Somerset apple farm, sometimes there can be anything up to 10 different varieties of apple, plus apple juice, berries & pears. The best thing for me about this stall is that they grow such different types of squashes & pumpkins, which compliment the table or just an autumnal basket display.
